Five Nights at Freddy’s is a popular horror-survival franchise, with its latest title “Five Nights at Freddy’s Sister Location”. The franchise features a grand cast of Five Nights at Freddy’s characters, each has its secret which is unclear even now. The tragedy of Five Nights at Freddy’s and the Five Nights at Freddy’s characters are not clearly explained, therefore, fans have tried numerous speculations about them, especially the revealed Afton Family. So this time, let’s round up and share the most viable fans’ theory so far about the Curse of Afton Family.
* Note: The speculation presented here bases on the entire franchise from Five Nights at Freddy’s 1 to Five Nights at Freddy’s Sister Location, including the novel Five Nights at Freddy’s The Silver Eyes.
The Tragedy of Five Nights at Freddy’s characters
Before we get into the Afton Family, it will be a good idea to round up the tragedy of Five Nights at Freddy’s so far.
The horror started with the mysterious death of five children at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, in which they were lured into the backroom and murdered. This drove the Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza’s reputation into the danger, and the restaurant became less and less popular. Throughout Five Nights at Freddy’s 1 to 3, many people were employed in order to watch out the restaurant at night; however, this was when the terror began. The animatronics in Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza’s started to roam at night and hunt down the guardsman. If they captured the guardsman, they would brutally put his body into a animatronic suit, ultimately kill him.
Throughout the franchise, it is revealed that the animatronics were possibly controlled by the spirits of the five children died in the previous murder. Their body is suspected to be put inside the animatronic suits, just like how the body of the guardsman would be put if he was captured by the animatronics.
We also know that the killer responsible for the five children murder is guy called “Purple Guy” through mini-games. After long time of speculation, we can positively confirm that the Purple Guy is the father of the Afton Family: William Afton.
The Curse of Afton Family
Before the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s Sister Location and the novel Five Nights at Freddy’s The Silver Eyes, fans can only give out wild guess about the true identity of the killer, or a.k.a the Purple Guy. Now we can pretty sure that the killer, or Purple Guy, is William Afton.
William Afton also has two confirmed children so far: Michael Afton and his daughter (her name was unknown). All of these three Five Nights at Freddy’s characters in the end died tragically, but they actually still live.
William Afton (as Purple Guy) while being cornered by the animatronics, hided in the Spring Bonnie suit which later known as Springtrap. But since the suit was malfunction, the springlocks loosen and caused the death of William Afton.
In Five Nights at Freddy’s Sister Location, the minigames revealed that Michael Afton was dead with Ennard inside his body. Despite that, he was still alive and became like Purple Guy, eventually this makes some fans think that Michael is the Purple Guy. In addition, William’s daughter was also dead, expected to be killed by the Circus Baby animatronic then had her soul trapped inside it.
With all that background, let’s take a look at each of the Afton family member:
William Afton, the origins of all horrid things
According to Five Nights at Freddy’s The Silver Eyes, William Afton was a professional technician, founder of Afton Robotics Inc. and Circus Baby’s Entertainment and Rental. He was also Fazbear Entertainment’s co-owner, explaining why Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza had the murderous animatronics band.
The terror of William Afton
Based on the game, William Afton is a heartless, cold killer, though he might have his love for his daughter. If he is truly the Purple Guy, then his murder streak can be explained like this:
At the beginning, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza used to be Fredbear’s Family Diner. One day William Afton (or Purple Guy) killed a crying boy, thus this boy could the one who controlled the Puppet later on. After the incident, Fredbear’s Family Diner was forced to close, but then at the same spot Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza was built. This could be due to William Afton’s influence, who wanted to erase his trace of the murder. Later on, William Afton lured five children to a backroom, killed them and possibly put their body into the animatronics. This could explain why the animatronics band in Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza search for the guardsman throughout Five Nights at Freddy’s 1 to 3.
William Afton in The Silver Eyes novel
In Five Nights at Freddy’s The Silver Eyes, William Afton disguised himself as a guardsman with the name of Dave Miller. He was confidence about his survivability against the animatronics thanks to his Spring Bonnie suit. He believed that the suit can trick the animatronics, but ironically this suit put the end to his human life. Since the Spring Bonnie was also Springtrap, it is possibly that William Afton was possessing Springtrap. Not much we’ve known about his fate since, but it is highly that William Afton/Springtrap was still alive.
Michael Afton, protagonist of Five Nights at Freddy’s Sister Location
Michael Afton is the protagonist in Sister Location, though throughout the game he was called as “Egg Benedict”. According to the game, Michael Afton was a skillful technician. His father, William Afton, ordered him to find the daughter, and ultimately Michael found his sister and freed her.
The transformation of Michael Afton
According to the mini-games in Five Nights at Freddy’s Sister Location, Michael Afton was once a respected man. However, thing start to change when Ennard was inside Michael’s body. His skin started to pale, gradually changed to purple tone. People were afraid of him and they hid in their house. When Michael vomited to the Ennard outside, Michael fell down and thought to be dead. But somehow he could stand and live with the appearance just like the Purple Guy. Many people thought him to be the Purple Guy, a.k.a the murderer of the franchise. However, that would conflict with the story of William Afton in the Silver Eyes novel. Therefore, the chance of Michael to be the Purple Guy was slim.
Michael’s message to his father
Also, Michael sent message to his father that: “Father. It’s me, Michael. I did it. I found it. It was right where you said it would be. They were all there. They didn’t recognize at first but then they thought I was you. And I found her. I put her back together, just like you asked me to. She’s free now. But something is wrong with me. I should be dead. But I’m not. I’ve been living in shadows. There is only one thing left for me to do now. I’m going to come find you. I’m going to come find you.”
This means that Michael has succeeded in finding his sister and freed her. However, he realized that he was still alive although he should be dead by now. In addition, his appearance seems to be similar to his father which made the animatronics to mistake him with his father. Ultimately, he mentioned that he would find his father, but his purpose was unknown.
Furthermore, this could mean Michael Afton was the Mike Schmidt in Five Nights at Freddy’s 1, or Fritz Smith in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 since they both received fired letter with the reason: odor. And this could explain why the so-called Mike Schmidt still continued his disturbing job despite clear understanding about the danger of that job.
After the end of Five Nights at Freddy’s Sister Location, Michael Afton’s fate is still currently unknown.
William’s Daughter, the Circus Baby?
Not much we has known about William’s daughter, about her appearance, age, and characteristic. But one thing seems to be legit is that William loves his daughter, despite his murders of other children.
According to the story, William created the Circus Baby for his daughter. However, he warned his daughter not to approach near it. In the Five Nights at Freddy’s Sister Location mini-games, we can see a scene of a little girl came near the Circus Baby. Then suddenly it launched its robot hand and grabbed the girl into its body, presumably killed the girl during the process. In this case, it is quite possible that the soul of William’s daughter possessed the Circus Baby.
The Fate of the Circus Baby, possibly William’s daughter
However, like most of the animatronics we’ve seen so far, Circus Baby gradually became twisted. She became Ennard and combined with other animatronics, desiring to get away from the facility. In Night 5, the so-called Circus Baby who guided the protagonist was actually Ennard. If the protagonist followed the instruction then Ennard would kill him. Then Ennard possessed the protagonist’s body, as the ending showed that the protagonist stood in front of a mirror with his eyes glowing.
On the other hand, if the protagonist ignored the instruction and went to the Private Room, he would have to survive until the next day. And if he did survive, he would return home watching TV. However, Ennard, or one of the Ennard, was able to follow the protagonist home and appeared in front of him.
“The Immortal and the Restless”
The curse of the Afton family begun with the murderer William Afton, then continued by his children Michael and daughter. All of these characters did not die, they continued their lives with unknown motives. As far as we can see, the story doesn’t stop here since there are many other mysteries. That said, we will have to wait and see what Cott Cawthon, the creator of the serie, bring to us in the future.
That is the Tragedy of Five Nights at Freddy’s Characters: Curse of Afton Family! Stay tune for more news in the future!
